St Stithians Foundation
“That here our ship once anchor’d and here its course was set …”
St Stithians College has been described by some as “a national asset”. Over the past 60 years, St Stithians has positioned itself as a leading educational institution, offering a quality, values-based, holistic education for both boys and girls. Set in a unique environment. Saints is, in many ways, one of a kind: it is a college of seven schools, situated on 105 hectares of land in the heart of a city, and offers a distinctive synergy model of education. The College prides itself on being at the forefront of educational best practice and thinking. Firmly rooted in South Africa, the College is globally recognised as a site of academic excellence.
The St Stithians Foundation
Education is continuously evolving and changing and this comes at a cost. Rising tuition fees and the shrinking pool of parents who can afford such fees are a threat facing most independent schools across the world. Hence, future sustainability and ensuring that generations to come continue to enjoy a quality Saints education, is the key focus of the St Stithians Foundation.
However, the Foundation Governors recognise that long-term sustainability in a democratic South Africa demands that the College takes a broader view of sustainability, and contributes to the wider community in which it operates.
The St Stithians Foundation is unique among South African schools in that the “inreach” (campus-focused) and “outreach” (community-focused, beyond campus) components are seen as equally important. This view reflects a commitment to the College’s Methodist roots, and the intention to be an institutional citizen in South African society.
Established in 2002 by a resolution of the Trustees of the St Stithians College Endowment Fund (the Trust), the St Stithians Foundation (the Foundation) was established as a separate division of the Trust. The intention was to create an entity within the ambit of the Trust, which was tasked specifically with the responsibility of ensuring the long-term sustainability of St Stithians College.
The purpose of the Foundation is defined as follows: “To carry forward, build on and sustain the original objectives of the Endowment Fund Trust which was set up in the Will of the late Albert Charles Collins, namely – the establishing, equipping and maintaining a Methodist educational school called St Stithians.”
The current Foundation Governors are listed below:
